Travel & LogisticsThe Colloquium on Requirements for UTC and Civil Timekeeping on Earth will be held at the Jefferson Scholars Foundation complex adjacent to the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Charlottesville is an inviting city to visitors, boasting a large number of attractions relative to its size. Full of interesting history, Charlottesville is well known as the home of two U.S. presidents and the University of Virginia with its striking Jeffersonian architecture. The climate in late May is pleasantly temperate with an average high temperature of 80°F (27°C) and average low temperature of 58°F (14°C). Reaching Charlottesville by Air Charlottesville Albemarle Airport (CHO) is the closest airport to Downtown Charlottesville. A rental car, taxi, or hotel courtesy shuttle is required to reach Downtown and the University approximately 10 miles away. Because of limited service through CHO, it is sometimes more economical to fly into Washington D.C. or Richmond and travel on to Charlottesville by automobile or Amtrak rail service.
Arriving by Rail Rail service to Charlottesville (CVS) is available via Washington Union Station, D.C. (WAS) on Amtrak’s Cardinal, Crescent, and Northeast Regional routes. Two or three trains stop daily in Charlottesville, depending on the day of the week. The Amtrak station is at 810 West Main Street between the Downtown Mall and the University, on the CAT Free Trolley route. Public transportation is available around Charlottesville for those arriving by rail. Arriving by Automobile Richmond is 80 miles (1.5 hours) away by car via Interstate Highway I-64. Washington, D.C., is approximately 100 miles (2 - 2.5 hours) away by car via Interstate Highway I-66 to State Highway 29. Arriving by Bus The Greyhound bus station is on West Main Street, about two blocks east of the Amtrak station. Venue Sessions will be conducted adjacent to the campus of University of Virginia at the Jefferson Scholars Foundation Because there is extremely limited parking at the meeting site, attendees should ride the CAT Free Trolley to JSF. The trolleys run every 15 minutes. Some local accommodations on or near the CAT Free Trolley are as follows. Accommodations Omni Charlottesville Hotel Hampton Inn & Suites Charlottesville at the University Courtyard Charlottesville - University Medical Center Red Roof Inn Dinsmore House Bed & Breakfast 200 South Street Inn Bed & Breakfast More information about hotel accommodations around the Charlottesville downtown area can be found here. |
