This work was created for an invitational exhibit entitled Spirit of the Great Plains. I initially had no idea about what to do and really was not going to put anything in. After some thought, I remembered my only real experience with the "Great Plains" was on a flight from Houston to Kansas City. I remember looking out the window and as far as I could see there were all these squares and rectangles- divisions not natural. So I decided to do a hierarchy of fences: plastic, metal, wood. The piece sits on a piece of Astroturf and is topped by a hawk carved out of walnut. Inside the piece is a CD player that plays sounds from nature, storms, etc....

No matter how hard we try, some things can't be fenced in.
