Mudheads

The mudheads are one of two groups of clowns in the Pueblo culture. They appear at most dances, always costumed in the same way. They wear masks made of a brown cloth, giving their heads a very rounded appearance. The eyes are outlined by a roll of the same material, as is the mouth. They wear a triangular neckpiece, usually black. Their upper bodies are bare and perhaps mud-splotched. They cannot speak, but only utter uninterpretable sounds.

They represent the idiot children of incestuous unions. They represent the results of disobedience of the strictures of society and are thus a warning against all evil.
